I don’t know about you, but I’m must to say I can really feel the “blues” this winter. Days are much shorter, specially around here in Finland. Lack of natural light and cold are hard on us and our mood, but there are the ways to decrease negative effect of winter months.
I would like to show you how you can battle with the problem. Some of those techniques are easy, some a bit more challenging, but all of them are worth trying. There's usually something that will help, so don't give up if the first “trick” doesn't work. Just keep trying. No reason to accepted defeat and let SAD (seasonal affective disorder) win! Below you can see the list of mine personal best:
Staying active
Study has shown that a daily one-hour walk in the middle of the day could be as helpful as light treatment for coping with the winter blues. Personally, I like a bit more active form, like outdoor workout or cycle ride, but just going around the block or walking the dog will work as well. Try not to fall on the sofa right after coming back from work. It might not be easy, but trust me, you will fill much better even after short walk.
Eat healthily
A healthy diet will boost your mood, give you more energy and stop you putting on weight over winter. Balance your craving for carbohydrates, such as pasta and potatoes, with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.
See the light
We could say it’s obvious, yet so many of us trying to stay indoors for whole winter. Go outdoors in natural daylight as much as possible, especially at midday and on brighter days. Inside your home, choose pale colours that reflect light from outside, and sit near windows whenever you can. You can also try light therapy with usage of light boxes / lamp. I must to say that’s something what I haven’t try yet, but I’m planning on making purchase of such lamp next season.
I would strongly advise you to try some of all of above. Even small changes will go a long way. And remember you are not alone on this one. Try to talk to friends and family as much as possible. On the very end positive thought, few more months and there will be much easer to recharge our batteries!
